24 August - Day 1

While exam speaking classes inevitably involve the practicing of speaking strategies, the developing of speaking strategies can be comparatively underdone. In this talk, we’ll look at how furthering these strategies can raise both our students’ exam performance and their potential to be autonomous learners. Teachers can look forward to a session full of tips and activities, including examples based on Prepare 2ed.

Exam listening classes can be challenging. Improvements in our students’ listening ability may often be slow and minimal, while we can also struggle to bring variety outside of the traditional exam listening format. In this highly practical session, we’ll look at ways of spicing up your listening classes, while also progressing your pupils’ exam performance at the same time. Teachers will leave armed with plenty of activities and exam techniques, including examples based on Prepare 2ed.

Getting students back into reading different types of text and using different reading skills at the start of the year will help them become more confident and develop their English language competence.
This session will look at some at ideas, resources for teachers and activities to help students develop their reading skill.

Helping exam candidates become familiar with the exam format and learning specific strategies for specific exam tasks is the key to success on Cambridge Exams.
This session will look at each section of the Reading & Use of English exam, and identify strategies students can use to avoid common mistakes and to better manage their time during this portion of the test.

Greg Wagstaff

Greg Wagstaff is a teacher trainer, academic manager and EFL video content creator based in Seville, Spain. Originally from Cambridge in England, he works as a freelance teacher trainer for both Cambridge University Press and Cambridge Assessment in Spain. He also works for the Cambridge University Press YouTube channel ‘Learn English with Cambridge’, scripting, editing and starring in videos for English language learners. Greg holds the Cambridge Delta and believes in blending new approaches and technology with traditional proven methods in the classroom, but that ultimately, simply being able to relate to our pupils is the most important element for learning to take place.

Victoria Peña

Victoria has worked for Cambridge Assessment English since September 2018. Prior to that, she taught English to preschool, primary and secondary school students for ten years, as well as preparing adults for Cambridge examinations. Since joining Cambridge Assessment English, she has been involved in creating content for teachers and collaborating in different government bilingual projects. She holds a degree in Translation and Interpreting and an MA in Applied Linguistics and a PhD focusing on the washback of proficiency exams. Victoria has a particular interest in the development and assessment of writing skills.

George Heritage

George started working at Cambridge Assessment English in 2013 after over 10 years’ experience teaching English in Latin America, Iberia and the UK. He worked in the Assessment department in Cambridge for 3 years on a variety of exams and support materials, including the Young Learners revision project. He moved to the Assessment Services department in Madrid in 2016, where he has worked on various assessment projects with regional bilingual programmes, and has designed and delivered training programmes for teachers across the world. He has a particular interest in the blended classroom and evolving approaches to formative assessment.

Claire Barnes

Claire Barnes has worked for BKC International House since 2007 as a teacher and teacher trainer. She has CELTA, DELTA and IHCYLT and is a CELTA trainer. In addition to teaching, Claire has also been running seminars and workshops as a Cambridge Assessment English presenter in many parts of Russia, as well as in Azerbaijan and, most recently, Uzbekistan and Armenia. From 1984 to 2007 she lived and worked in Germany, where she enjoyed professional development teaching students.
